Building Grameen America: Project Gotham

My name is Shah Newaz, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Grameen America LLC. I’m from Bangladesh and have
over 20 years of experience building microfinance programs on behalf of Grameen Bank and its affiliates. I’ve helped implement Grameen’s group lending model in both Bangladesh and the Dominican Republic. Now I’ve come to the United States to ry and achieve the same success for Grameen, starting with New York City. I recently moved from Bangladesh to Queens, New York, and have committed myself to the success of Grameen America. At the moment I am completing field research: identifying the best locations to establish Grameen branches and preparing for client recruiting.
First Impressions
After arriving in New York, the first place I went was the neighborhood of Jackson Heights, which features a large Bengali population. Several members of the community suggested I visit the neighborhood restaurants to interact with Bangladeshi people, many of whom would be potential clients. I was introduced to someone who showed me around Jackson Heights, which was very helpful. Soon enough, two meetings were set up in the Aladdin restaurant, giving me a chance to talk to potential borrowers in a comfortable setting. [article truncated for comp purposes]
On September 1, 2007, I moved out of the hotel and into an apartment on Woodhaven Blvd. I am looking forward to completing my research so we can implement the Grameen model and begin lending. It is an exciting time!

It is wonderful that the most successful microcredit institution is expanding to encompass the US. My question is how does Grameen plan to define poverty in the US? Will there be a multi point system of living conditions similar to the ten used in Bangladesh by Grameen Bank? thanks and keep up the good work-

Thank you prof. Yunus, Vidar, Shah and the whole Grameen America team for bringing this "technology transfer" from Bangladesh to the US! The poverty in my own country is what initially attracted me to what prof. Yunus is accomplishing. Keep up the fantastic work! Yunus Movie Project

Dear Mr. Newaz, Good evening. My name is Mark Puno, I am 27 years old and I am a filipino in descent. I live in Pensacola Beach, Florida. It is a tough life out here...almost everything that my wife and I earn goes to taxes and the bills. We are practically working really hard to pay off our bills and making our employers richer while we live from paycheck to paycheck. Sometimes, we even have to take a cash advance to cover unexpected expenses. We are getting no where. I am paying off my college debt and so is my wife. I have always been dreaming of opening my own business. My wife is Italian and we are dreaming of opening our own Italian Restaurant in Pensacola Beach, Florida. But, the only problem is that it is going to cost us a total of $1,000,000 to open up the restaurant...that is including buying the equipment, overhead, business license, beer and wine license, paying employees, paying rent on the building, etc. I really need your help, because we are tired of the rat race working from paycheck to paycheck and having nothing for ourselves. I have developed a Business Plan for you to see and when you reply to this message, please let me know if I will be able to get that Minority Small Business Loan from you. And I will email you in return my Business Plan that I have developed. I am asking for your help and I am asking for $1,000,000 in Small Business Loan to fulfill my Wife's and I dreams! Dr. Yunus, I thank you for your time and patience and I know that you are a busy man. Please email me back as soon as you can. God Bless! Respectfully, Mark Puno Email:

Mr. Newaz, I am a student at the University of Memphis in Memphis, TN, where I am studying Accounting and Chinese. I have long been concerned with the condition of the poor of my city, particularly in the inner-city. We have many problems to deal with in our city, such as malignant racism and a corrupt city government that has hindered, if not prevented, any effective work to alleviate poverty here. I read Prof. Yunus's 'Banker to the Poor' last semester and I am currently reading his most recent work. I believe that an organization like Grameen might be what this city needs, and I am very interested in bringing such an initiative here. I will be watching the growth of Grameen America very closely and will hopefully have the opportunity to work with your organization in the future.

It was so very exciting to have the opportunity to meet Professor Yunus yesterday at the book signing at Barnes & Nobles. It was an additional treat to have the opportunity to meet all the other people who have contributed to Grameen Bank/Foundation/America. It is so very interesting to be able to learn and take part in the process developing and redesigning new economical theories and being able to see first-hand how this development affetcts the lives of REAL people. I look forward to working with Grameen America. There is a saying, "If you enjoy the job you do, you'll never work a day in your life." I honestly believe that.

I cannot find the worlds to express my enthusiam to see that Grameen will be operating in the United States. I have followed Grameen's efforts for quite sometime and recently completed Mr. Yunus' "Banker to the Poor". I look forward to contacting Grameen America in August 2008 upon completion of my Master's degree to inquire how I may be of service. In the meantime, I wish you the greatest success in your efforts to enable our society's poor to reach self-sufficiency.

I recently moved to the city and noticed some of the same things you did. The poor people live better than the poor in other countries i.e. Honduras (where I was a Peace Corps Volunteer). People are also out of their homes 10-12 hours a day because of work. Then they get home, eat and sleep to do it it again the next day. I know this for a fact because I just lived through it the past three and a half months

Hi Michael, Thank you for the post. We will keep you posted as to our progress. In our first year we will be operating solely as a lender. Our aspiration is to expand beyond pure lending and become a depository institution as well. Best, Phil www.grameenamerica.com

I manage a family literacy program for Queens Library. We have 2 family centers in Long Island City and 10 different classes in 5 community branches (Jackson Heights, Corona, Flushing, Woodside and Browaday). I would like to begin a conversation on how you could provide information on microcredit through the Grameen Bank to the families enrolled in our program. Looking forward to taking to you soon.
